Dear Scarlet,

Take a look at the following website:

http://www.oiseaux.net/birds/photos/chinese.pond.heron.html

Given the plumage variations shown in the pond heron photos, I believe you will see similarities between your posted photos and the ones at the website which are closer, clearer views.

Respectfully,
Mary

Dear Scarlet,

Mr. Barrett Pierce is taking his photos of the unusual heron taken on your tour last week to Gambell, AK for review by Mr. Paul Lehman who has considerable expertise in Asian vagrants. Since he is now out of communication range, Barrett asked me to relay his request for you to keep all the photos that you took of the bird in the event that they will supply additional views and information. Please look to see if you were able to capture an "in-flight" view of the odd heron. That would be most helpful.

If you receive this posting, please acknowledge with an e-mail to fleetsurgeon@hotmail.com

Thank you for your help on this.

Respectfully,
Mary

Scarlet,

I was wondering if this might be what I've heard refer to as a "Teddy" morph of the Reddish Egret where the white morph and normal plumage egret is crossed. You get white below and a sort of bib or "teddy" appearance on the breast area from the normal plumage with the plumage above the breast the normal coloration. I've only ever seen one of these on Galveston Island a couple of years ago.
