Two great blue herons in a battle...I took video and these are clips from my video. It was a battle to the death I presume but I intervened and the battle ended by both flying off.

Hey Scarlet,

Thank you for posting all of the pictures.

With the Blue Heron battle, the Frigate with the hook in its bill, and the dolphin with the Remora on board, there is no shortage of concerns and drama, on the Laguna Madre.

Write to you soon, John

Hi Scarlet - fabulous pictures, as always! Didn't know Blue Herons were so mean -- I've seen them chasing off other birds and protecting their territory, but didn't think they'd go so far as to try and kill one of their own!

Also enjoyed your column in the 8-24 edition of "Parade" about these majestic birds and how they eat just about anything. I've watched one of them catching the biggest fish ever and I was absolutely sure he wouldn't be able to eat it, but he turned it round and round, this way and that, until it finally fit into his beak, and I could see it sliding down his slender throat, inch by inch...

Have to tell you another story - I'm so excited - went out to the convention center this afternoon, not expecting any action since it was so hot. Hadn't seen Aloisius in a long while, so I went to the pond and called his name, about 5 times, the way I had heard you call her last winter once, when you were there with a group of birders.... and yup, you guessed it, she came slithering along and came to say hello - I was so thrilled!
Have missed seeing you - will stop in soon for a visit!
Hugs,
Madeleine

These pics are fabulous, Scarlett. Did you happen to see the roseate spoonbill video from our cruise that I posted on the SOBnews blog?

I just got back from vacation in northern MI. We kayaked down the Crystal river and saw a great blue heron - didn't know they were so widespread.

Hey Scarlet thanks to Seth for getting the video file to open.

Incredible battle and knowing the power in the beak of a territorial tern and a snatching gull orthat that they are tough enough to gulp down a barbed stingray, I too would feel for the one on the receiving end of that darting spear of a bill.

Thank You, John
